Mission of the Department of Art and Art History

As an integral academic component of the College of Fine Arts, the Department of Art and Art History embraces and promotes the College's three primary objectives, which collectively stimulate the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and creativity, and service. As the source of all departmental goals, the following College's mission and goals statements are amplified:

  • Provide the State of Texas and the nation with well-educated and highly qualified artists, designers, teachers, scholars, as well as a well-educated general academic community, regardless of specific major.
  • Build and extend the knowledge and skill base of scholarly research and creative experimentation from which future developments in the production and understanding of the visual arts can emerge. (This objective encompasses art history, studio art, art criticism, and aesthetics, as well as the applied practices in design and teaching.)
  • Provide artistic experiences in the visual arts for audiences of all age while embracing the whole university community.
