Associate Professor Steve Bourget earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Montreal in 1994, studying Moche archaeology and iconography. Between 1995 and 1998, his archeological research at Huaca de la Luna, the principal ceremonial center of the Moche culture, resulted in the discovery of a massive sacrificial site associated with high-status burials. The results of this research have led to new insights into the socio-symbolic dimensions of landscape, of the nature of Moche religion and iconography. These investigations have also been the subject of a number of documentaries produced for the Learning Channel, Discover Magazine, National Geographic Channel, etc.
In 2004, Dr. Bourget initiated a new archaeological project at Huaca el Pueblo, one of the most important ceremonial-administrative centers in the ZaƱa Valley between the first and the eighth century. One of the main objectives of this research is to study the political and cultural development of the Moche north the the Pampa of Paijan. For more information about this new archaeological research, please visit the project's website:
Professor Bourget will serve as the Graduate Advisor for the M.A. and PH.D. Art History programs in Spring 2008.
