Tuition and fees for the entire two-year, 60-credit hour M.F.A. in Design, at rates in effect on September 1, 2011 are about $29,000 for Texas residents and $54,000 for non-residents of Texas. Tuition and fees are established by the Texas State Legislature and are subject to change.
The Faculty's goal is to make awards to all non-resident and international students that waive the non-resident portion of tuition. Therefore it is very likely that each admitted student will be charged resident tuition. All non-resident students are automatically considered for this scholarship. Students do not need to apply for it.
A limited number of recruitment fellowships will be offered to accepted applicants based primarily on their application portfolios. All applicants are automatically considered for these fellowships. Students do not need to apply for these directly. These fellowships range from $1,000 – $12,000.
The faculty offer a limited number of fellowships to students continuing in the second year of the program. These fellowships are based primarily on all aspects of the student's performance in the first year and range from $1,000 to $4,000.
Teaching Assistants (TAs) assist faculty members in classrooms and/or monitor open-laboratory periods. In Fall 2011, TAs were paid $2,704 per semester for 10-hour appointments, and given tuition assistance of $1,892 per semester. For 20-hour per week positions, the salary is $5,409 per semester, and includes health insurance, resident tuition rates, and tuition assistance of $3,784 per semester.
Graduate students are automatically eligible for Federal Stafford loans as independent students. Students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as they have completed their federal tax return. The FAFSA code for UT is 003658. File the FAFSA by the March 15 priority deadline to be considered for University grants and Departmental need-based fellowships. Review the University's Office of Student Financial Services.
