This website is just one project in the course

DES 313 Design History Lab

Professor Gloria Lee

The main idea behind this course is that no designed object, service or environment exists outside cultural and social history. Every product stands as an anthropological situation and presents opportunities for understanding and interpreting cultures. Someone always has an interest in designing, manufacturing, buying and using any given product, in any given culture, and in any given historical moment. Thus, each material object represents social, cultural, economic, environmental and technological concerns of the period. And, every designed artifact or system unites three basic elements: aesthetics, ethics, and technic.

These were independent research projects focussed upon a Texas-based object, site or material of student’s choice.
