Design Lab Policies

(the following policies are the result of many years of students interacting with the design lab. this lab is a service to you and these policies are for your protection and for the protection of your equipment that your design fees pay for. please respect the policies and help the lab function as efficiently as possible)

golden rule | lab rules | transfer folder | the classroom | check out | punchcards/color printing | warning

the golden rule
the proctor is not your teacher. he/she is there for tech support and to check out equipment to students. any questions you have pertaining to software should be answered by your professor or looked up in a manual first. if you still need help, then ask the proctor.

lab rules
no food or beverages are allowed near the computers. any food or drink must be left at the table near the front entrance or in the classroom.

no bookbags on the computer tables, they can unplug cords.

do not take anything that belongs to the lab out of the lab unless you have checked it out from the proctor.

do not unplug or disconnect anything in the lab. if you need to connect a scsi device from home ask the proctor to connect it for you. if there is a problem and something needs to be disconnected, ask the proctor to do it for you.

if something is wrong with your computer please tell the proctor immediately so the problem can be remedied.

illegal copying of software or fonts will not be tolerated.

sign up sheets are posted weekly. sign up times are in 2 hour increments. if you're late by more than 10 minutes, whoever needs that computer can sign up for your time. sign up, is for one machine at a time. you can sign up for another machine only after you have utilized time already signed up for.

design technologies classes have priority over the computers on the island during their class time. if you are working on one of these computers and the tech class comes in to work, you will need to move to another computer, no questions asked. generally, all computers on the island, except for the G3s (stations 1, 15 and 16) and the cd burning station (station 2), are reserved for the tech classes. the other 4 computers and back wall computers are generally free for your use.

the lab is for your use only. you may not bring friends or relatives in the design lab to surf the internet, type papers or print out things. only you and your classmates paid for this lab, only you and your classmates can use it.

you may not print out any personal projects on our printers such as party fliers. that wastes toner and stock that other students need and paid for.

if you are working on a personal project on a computer and another student needs that computer for schoolwork, you will be asked to move.

students are not allowed behind the proctor station for any reason. if there is any thing you need that is behind the desk you will need to find a proctor or deborah to check it out to you. you may not take anything from the desk or behind the desk such as manuals, books or office supplies without checking it out first. this is the only way we can keep track of our supplies. the area behind the desk is also not a storage area for personal belongings or large projects. the fridge is not for your lunch either. things get damaged and food disappears mysteriously when behind the desk and we are not responsible for any losses.

you are expected to be up and out the door at the exact closing time. printing stops 15 minutes before closing. and you should begin saving and transferring your files to your disk 5 minutes before closing. you may not wait for a print out or begin saving past closing (the printers and computers are turned off at closing time). there are no exceptions to this rule. the proctor still has several duties to perform after you have left and for the most part are design students themselves. respect their time and their schedule.

the transfer folder
the only times you should be using the transfer folder is for transferring files to another computer or to share a file with another student or proctor. copy any files you are working on into the hard drive of your computer, then dump the original files in the transfer folder and work off of your own computer.

the transfer folder is for transfer only! it is not to store files until you purchase a disk or because you forgot your disks. it is not for overnight storage, or to store files that are too large. the transfer is dumped every evening. nothing is sacred so do not store files overnight on the transfer folder.

the transfer folder is dumped as needed when it becomes too full. this can occur at any time of day. this is done in order to reduce the chances of the server crashing which will result in the loss of yours and everyone else's files. to be safe, always take your files with you on your zip or check out a jaz disk when you leave the design lab.

the classroom
you may eat in the classroom but you must cover your eating area with scrap paper and use the coasters under your drinks to protect the wood tables. (students use these tables to assemble projects and do not wish to find a big ranch stain on their work). when finished you must clean your area of containers, drips and stains. throw any food containers in the garbage can outside the lab in the hallway to keep rotting food odors down. when you leave the lab for the day make sure you throw away any food items before you leave. if this becomes problematic, deborah retains the right to take away food priveleges.

any time you work in the classroom, you must clean up after yourselves. because there are other classes and students working in the classroom besides yourself, any scrap paper, tools or projects must be removed when you leave for the class or for the day. if a class is starting and the room is a mess the proctor will throw away everything that is found to be problematic.

if you bring it with you, take it with you. the classroom is not your locker. do not put any belongings (bags, tools, projects), that you want to keep, in the classroom for any longer than a day. there is no guarantee that it will be there when you return the next morning, weekend or semester. everything is subject to throwing away as deemed necessary by the proctors or deborah.

do not use any spray fixative, or adhesives in the classroom. there are spray booths in the upstairs classrooms for those purposes. if you are caught spraying in the room you will thouroughly clean the sticky mess you left and more than likely will be banned from using the classroom outside of class time. any stray cans of spray mount found in the classroom will be taken up immediately without question, never to be returned. if you use other types of adhesives in the room, cover your area with lots of newspaper, or scrap paper to protect the surfaces.

desl provides students with cutting mats to protect the surfaces. use them when cutting anything that needs a surface to cut on, such as paper or mat board. if your are caught cutting directly on the tables you will be subject to deborah's wrath and spend a weekend sanding the table down to remove the cut. do not use the cuttimg mats as place mats for your chinese takeout or as a dropcloth while you paint or glue projects together. they need to stay neat and clean so that you and others can make clean cuts for your projects...remember craft is key, a grease stain on the back of your project is not impressive to the faculty.

check out
any items checked out temporarily must be returned that day. you must give the item to the proctor directly. if the proctor is absent from the desk do not just leave it on the proctor desk. find him or her and make sure he or she checks your name off of the check out list.

any items checked out overnight must be returned in 24 hours. items checked out on fridays can be returned on monday morning. if you need it longer than a day you must bring it back the next day and check it out again.

for special requests, holiday or long weekend checkouts you must talk with deborah. only her ok will allow you any special priveleges, the proctors don't have any power in this area.

if you fail to return an item at the agreed upon time, you will be prohibited from checking out that item for a month.

punch cards/color printing
desl offers students special services (color printouts, wire-O's, vellum) which are paid for by punchcards in the amount of $5. for every punchcard you get $5 worth of services. they are sold in Janet Bizzell's office, ART 3.330, monday-friday, 8:30am-10am, 1:30pm-3pm, only. you must get a receipt from her and bring it to the proctor on duty in order to receive a card. desl does not receive cash directly.

if you need a color printout leave your files in a named folder in the transfer folder in a folder called 'Desl Color Printing.' fill out a color printout request and leave it with the proctor.

procedural printing is done by the proctor during the evening shift (6pm) monday-thursday. so if you turn in your request before 6pm, monday-thursday, you should get the printout by the time the lab closes that day. if there is a large quantity of requests, turnaround time may be even longer than expected.

on demand printing is up to the proctor on duty. he or she is not required to print out your file 5 minutes before your class starts for a critique, so plan accordingly.

printouts are paid for before receiving them. any mistakes on your part still count as a printout so make sure you double check everything before letting the proctor print your file out. if the proctor makes a mistake, another printout will be done free of charge.

remember, we are not a service bureau. it is a privelege for you to use this equipment for a small cost and the proctors are doing you a favor by agreeing to add this service to their duties. please do not abuse your priveleges. lack of planning on your end does not mean a crisis on our end.

warning
failure to comply with these rules will only result in your loss. we warn you now, do not test us. many students have lost priveleges, digital files, final projects, and personal belongings in the past because they did not act responsibly. this all equals money out of your pocket. in order to take full advantage of all the opportunities the lab offers you, simply respect the facility, the equipment and the services that you paid for.
