After graduating from The University of Texas with a B.A. in Plan II (Liberal Arts) and concentration in Design, Lecturer Elaine Shen earned her M.F.A. in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art. Upon completing her graduate studies she moved to New York where she founded Shendauer Industries, a multidisciplinary design studio, while working within an eclectic mix of professional settings including Big Room (collective of set designers), M.R.S (clothing label) and GAS (art gallery). Before returning to her beloved hometown of Austin, Elaine also taught at Yale University and Fordham University. Her current work concerns the emotive potential of design with regard to the exploration of fragile moment-spaces and intersections between the natural and man-made worlds. These investigations take on forms ranging from large scale temporary installations to pocket-sized objects.
