The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest and most diverse art departments in the country and is an exciting place to study studio art as an undergraduate or graduate student. The Studio Art Division is comprised of seven Areas of Study: Ceramics, Metals, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Transmedia. We invite you to explore the information presented here on the website.
Dan Sutherland Associate Professor The Studio Art Department believes that students should receive a good foundation in studio art at the outset of their college career. Both the B.A. and B.F.A. in Studio Art degrees require four core courses (Drawing Foundations, Two-Dimensional Foundations, Three-Dimensional Foundations, and Time-Based Foundations.) In the second year of study, a student is able to choose from beginning courses in specific media (ceramics, drawing and painting, metals, photography, printmaking, sculpture and transmedia). Majors/degrees are not offered in any specific media; however, students are free to choose courses from among the seven studio art areas as they fulfill requirements for graduation. The MFA degree is a 60-credit hour, three-year, full-time program that is intense and challenging. We have 30 full-time graduate faculty members in studio art, 32 graduate students, and over 400 undergraduate students. Unique and innovative courses allow our students to choose a curriculum that will inspire and inform their art making. Students apply to one area only, and specialize significantly in that area during their studies. Studio space is provided for graduate students in their area of concentration. Our distinguished faculty works closely with graduate students to investigate contemporary art issues as well as to develop conceptual and technical skills. The facilities and studio spaces are excellent. The faculty of the Studio Art Division are internationally known artists who teach courses ranging from the most basic, lower-division introductory classes to the most advanced graduate seminars, with a wide range of upper-division classes in between. The diverse faculty of highly regarded artist/educators represents a wide range of teaching styles and aesthetic philosophies. Under the faculty web pages you will find a brief biography for each professor, and many show examples of their artwork. |
