Professor Coles earned her M.A. from San Diego State University. She has received several Visual Arts Fellowships Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts: one in 1980, another in 1984, and one in 1986. In 1977 she was co-recipient with Arline Fisch of the Master Craftsman Apprenticeship Grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Professor Coles' metal work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Australia, Denmark, England and Ireland as well as most states in the United States. Her metalwork has traveled in many national invitational group exhibitions featuring contemporary metalsmiths. Her work has also been featured in Design Visions, published by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, with a critical view by Sarah Bodine and Michael Dunas. The national publication, Metalsmith, has reviewed and featured her work frequently. She participated in the Society of North American Goldsmiths National Endowment for the Arts workshop program and has been a visiting artist at numerous symposiums and workshops.
