Professor Mariani attended Cooper School of Art, Cleveland Institute of Art, and graduated from Yale University in 1958. Throughout his career, his work has primarily explored light, and through this exploration Professor Mariani has made a transition from painting to sculpture. He has been utilizing laser and holography in his recent work. Currently he is exploring ways of processing metal to create the illusion of projected dimension through light paralleling holography. In 1991 Professor Mariani completed a twenty-four foot sculpture commissioned by the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The work included eight sixteen-foot holograms, gold, silver, crystals, emeralds, and meteorites.
