After receiving her B.F.A. from the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in 1968, Associate Professor Whyne moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for ten years and received an M.A. in painting from San Francisco State University. Whyne says she was very fortunate to be living there at a time when there was a wild mix of resurgence of painting styles, the birth of the underground “comix,” and the discovery of self-taught visionary artists. She moved to Texas in 1977 to teach at The University of Texas at Austin and began exhibiting in Houston and Dallas as well as in New York and California. She continues to show with the Texas Gallery in Houston and the Lyons-Matrix Gallery and dberman gallery in Austin. She was awarded two National Endowment for the Arts Grants in 1980 and 1989 as well as a Gottlieb Foundation Grant in 1994.
