Fred Woody holds a B.S. in Education and a B.F.A. in studio art from Northwest Missouri State University. In 1978 he received an M.F.A. in studio art from the University of Montana where he taught Drawing Foundations, Photo-Printmaking, and directed the Saturday Arts Program for children. Woody joined the UT faculty in 2000 after twenty-five years of teaching art in public schools.
During his twenty-one years with the Austin Independent School District, Woody was a middle school and high school art teacher, served as a teacher trainer in the AISD Professional Development Academy, and was the development coordinator for the AISD Fine Arts Academy at McCallum HS. In 1999 he received the Texas Art Education Association's (TAEA) award as Secondary Art Educator of Year. In 2004, TAEA again recognized Fred Woody as the Higher Education Art Educator of the Year.
Woody conducts Visual Art Studies (VAS) and Curriculum and Instruction (EDC) courses. During summer sessions he teaches a studio course for non-art majors. He serves as the Coordinator of the Student Field Experiences in Art Education, placing and supervising VAS students in art internships and apprenticeships throughout the Austin area. Woody is a consultant for exit exam questions for the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC). Woody serves as the faculty advisor for the student art education organization, C.A.N.V.A.S. He also facilitates the College of Fine Arts' annual Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) and an annual TAEA mini-conference at UT for area art teachers.
