Graduate Art Education Program

Theses Completed

Program Description

The purpose of the Master's Degree program in art education is to provide students with the opportunity, environment, and resources to explore issues in art education, conduct research on a significant aspect of art education, and enhance their knowledge of art and art education through academic work in art education, studio art and art history courses. The Master of Arts in art education is a thirty-six (36) credit hour program of study. All students in this M. A. program complete required courses, write a thesis proposal, take qualifying examinations, and write a thesis under the direction of a thesis committee.

The Master of Arts in Art Education is designed to prepare three groups of graduate students:

  • Option A: Those students wanting to enhance their knowledge of art education at the elementary and secondary school levels.
  • Option B: Those students interested in learning about and working in the field of art museum education.
  • Option C: Those students desiring to investigate and conduct professional activities in community-based art organizations.

Students interested in adding Texas Art Teacher Certification (EC-12) to their master's degree should hold a degree in studio art or have completed, prior to applying to the master's program and beginning the certification program, a minimum of 21 credit hours in specific foundational studio art courses. (See last page of PDF document M.A. Art Education Admission and Program Guide below.) Certification requires additional coursework in studio art as well as a series of courses in educational methodology, human development, and professional development. Some courses required for certification may also fulfill master's degree requirements.
