M.A. Art Education, Financial Aid

Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees for the entire two-year, 36-credit hour M.A. in Art Education, at rates in effect on September 1, 2009, are about $17,000 for Texas residents and $31,000 for non-residents of Texas. Tuition and fees are established by the Texas State Legislature and are subject to change.

Non-resident Tuition Waivers
The Faculty's goal is to make awards to all non-resident or international students that waive the non-resident portion of tuition for the two-year period of the degree. Therefore it is very likely that each admitted student will be charged resident tuition. Students are automatically considered for this fellowship.

Recruitment Fellowships
A limited number of recruitment fellowships will be offered to accepted students from the Department of Art and Art History, the College of Fine Arts, and the Office of Graduate Studies. All applicants are automatically considered for these fellowships based on their application materials. Students do not apply for these directly. These fellowships range from $1,000 - $12,000.

Travel Awards
The Department also has limited funds to support graduate travel. These grants are awarded in the Fall and Spring of each year based on a written proposal.

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistants (TAs) provide support to specific undergraduate classes or to a specific faculty member. All students are considered for appointment as Teaching Assistants, usually in their second year.

In Fall 2009, students appointed as TA s for twenty hours per week are paid $5,250 per semester and receive health insurance coverage. Additionally, twenty-hour TA s receive tuition assistance of $3,566 for total compensation of $8,816 per semester.

A non-resident student appointed as a TA or for twenty hours per week for a semester is eligible for resident tuition during the appointment. That is, non-resident TAs are charged resident rather than non-resident tuition.

Appointments of teaching assistants and assistant instructors are made on a semester-by-semester basis. Graduate students may receive up to four semesters of support as a TA . Appointees can be terminated if they are negligent in either their duties or in their graduate studies. Appointments follow departmental criteria, receive approval by the Department Chair, and are subject to the availability of funds.

Student Loans and Grants

Graduate students are automatically eligible for Federal Stafford loans as independent students. Students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as their application to the graduate school has been submitted, and they have completed their federal tax return. The FAFSA code for UT Austin is 003658. File the FAFSA by the March 31 priority deadline to be considered for University grants and Departmental need-based fellowships.
