Two Faculty Members Currently Exhibiting Work at The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition The Pictures Generation, 1974-1984 (April - August 2) includes work by two professors in the Department of Art and Art History: Michael Smith and Troy Brauntuch.

The exhibition surveys the “appropriation art” movement that crystallized around the seminal Pictures exhibition at Artists Space in New York City in 1977. Robert Longo, Cindy Sherman, Troy Brauntuch and Richard Prince were a part of this movement and shared something in common - they were the first generation of American artists raised on television and advertising. Brought up in the burgeoning media environment of post WWII America, they drew their inspiration from film, television, magazines and advertisements. This exhibition features 160 works (photographs, performances, videos, audio features) by Troy Brauntuch, Michael Smith, Sherrie Levine, Barbara Kruger, Jack Goldstein, Matt Mullican, Richard Prince, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, James Welling and others, and was organized by associate photo curator Douglas Eklund.
