University Co-op Sponsors New Student-Run Exhibition Space

Gallery 3 at the Co-op Opens September 8 with No Place Like Home

Austin - The University Co-op is pleased to announce the opening of Gallery 3, a new student-run exhibition space sponsored by the Co-op, in association with the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The inaugural exhibition, No Place Like Home, opened September 8 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.; the exhibition will be on view through October 1.

No Place Like Home features new work by Ali Fitzgerald, Erick Michaud, Jared Steffensen, and David Woody, all graduate students in Studio Art at The University of Texas at Austin. Amanda Douberley, Gallery 3 Curator and a graduate student in Art History, organized the exhibition.

Where is home? Is it the place you live, the town where you were born, or the house you grew up in? How does a new environment become home, or at least like home? Is home even a place at all, or is it no place, more a memory or illusion than an actual location? The artists in No Place Like Home each engage these questions through paintings, photographs, sculptures, and videos inspired by the places they live and work.

Gallery 3 at the Co-op will present exhibitions year-round of work by students, faculty, staff and alumni in the Department of Art & Art History drawn from a semi-annual call for proposals, as well as juried exhibitions and shows organized by the gallery curator. This premiere exhibition space will give students in particular a place to explore the transition from studio to gallery in advance of degree exhibitions, and provide a space for curatorial experimentation.

Located adjacent to the Co-op's new Art Department, Gallery 3 deepens the University Co-op's commitment to supporting the arts at the University of Texas at Austin with a permanent exhibition space. The University Co-op is a non-profit organization, and a true cooperative. One hundred percent of after-rebate profits are used to support university-related projects and activities. The Co-op is continually talking to various University departments and organizations about their needs for assistance in updating or enhancing their student-related facilities or projects.

The Department of Art and Art History is one of the largest and most diverse art departments in the US, with an enrollment of over 800 undergraduate and graduate students. The distinguished faculty and excellent facilities support many unique course offerings and special programs. US News and World Report has ranked the Department of Art and Art History among the top ten graduate programs in the country.

The University Co-op is located at 2246 Guadalupe and is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Free parking is available behind the Co-op with validation.
