Poetry Circle and "Citizenship Potluck" with Sekou Sundiata, The Austin Project, and Las Crudas

February 17, 7:00 pm at The Rhizome Collective.

Nationally acclaimed poet and performer Sekou Sundiata hosts an exploration of community and citizenship through the sharing of poetry, music, and ideas. He will be joined by the Austin-based Cuban hip-hop sensation, Las Crudas, and the poets of The Austin Project. The audience is invited to bring poems, music, and ideas to share. This event is free and open to the public.

When: Saturday, February 17, 7:00 pm

Where: The Rhizome Collective, 300 Allen Street, Austin, Texas 78702

Sekou Sundiata is a nationally acclaimed poet and performer from New York. He is recognized as one of the most important figures in the spoken word and Black Arts movement. His work owes its heritage to the African oral tradition, jazz music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance.

Sundiata is in residence at The University of Texas at Austin for three weeks in November and February presenting his America Project, an inquiry into the meaning of American citizenship in the 21st century. He comes to Austin after two years of traveling across the country, hosting discussions on what it means to be an American in a post-9/11 world. The America Project culminates in a multi-media performance at Hogg Auditorium on February 28, "the 51st (dream) state."

This event is sponsored by the Humanities Institute, College of Fine Arts, and Center for African and African American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, and The Rhizome Collective, a non-profit center for community organizing and urban sustainability.
