Full Name:
Lauren Kane
Major/Year:
M.F.A. Candidate in Drama and Theatre for Youth
Favorite class in Theatre & Dance and why:
Applied Theatre has been my favorite class thus far. It was the perfect mix of theory and practice. We worked together as a group to create a definition of applied theatre and drama. The class discussions were incredible and the group really made the class their own.
Favorite thing about Austin:
Austin is an incredible city. The city has so much to offer. There are incredible cultural activities and museums. The running path along Town Lake is wonderful and the people are friendly. What I love most about Austin is how socially aware and conscious the city is. People know why they believe in things and that is refreshing!
Favorite place to study:
My favorite place to study in Austin is Austin Java on Barton Springs. They have free WiFi and endless cups of coffee and iced tea. The food is great and they never get mad at you for sitting at the same table for six hours.
Biography:
Prior to attending UT I worked at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC as well as the Kennedy Center and Round House Theatre in DC. I went to Indiana University for my undergraduate degree in Theatre and Drama. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles and tried my hand at being an actor. After a few months I realized I wanted to contribute to the greater good and started working for a theatre that did Shakespeare for inner city students. This changed my life and I started on my journey to being a theatre educator!
Current projects/research/interests:
My research interest is in professional development for teachers. I am studying how drama–based instruction integrated into core curriculum can help reach students that have learning disabilities and behavioral disorders.
