Program Overview
The Performance as Public Practice graduate program explores the widest possible parameters of performance in its relationship to historical and contemporary global culture as well as to local communities. The program applies the skills of performance studies, theory and practice to expand the civic and academic dialogue prompted by the work of citizen/artist/scholars.
The Performance as Public Practice program is for students and professionals who want to:
- integrate theory and practice in teaching, scholarship, production, and service
- publish research and scholarship
- write think pieces and op-ed essays for popular publications
- perform in diverse public contexts
- serve as production dramaturgs and outreach directors
- enrich arts administration
- develop public programming with foundations and non-profits
- contribute to public policy
- teach in universities, colleges, high schools, and community centers
- use performance as a tool for understanding communities and difference
- theorize performance as a site of civic engagement
- redefine and recontextualize the role of performance in culture
