Recently I have taught Theatre History almost exclusively, although for many years I taught a wide variety of courses, including a history of dramatic theory, a history of Shakespearean production, plus seminars in postmodern theatrical performance, and contemporary theory.
I am currently completing the manuscript for the 10th edition of History of the Theatre, which should be done in 2007. I am also writing a history of scenic design with the cooperation of the Tobin Collection (at the McNay Museum in San Antonio). This history is well underway but work on it has been interrupted by the demands for completing the revision of my history book. Since both of these books are comprehensive in their scope, it is difficult for me to state a narrow field of specialization, although I have spent much more time on modern and contemporary theatre than anything else. I have written a number of articles on French theatre in various eras, as well as on American and British theatre. My books have been translated into Italian, Czech, Farsi (Iranian), Chinese, Korean, and Hebrew
I have been teaching in university theatre programs since 1949, and during that 50+ year span, I have shifted my interests a lot just as the field of theatre as taught in universities has changed a lot. I have spent a lot of my university life involved in professional organizations and concerns about the directions of change in theatre. I have served as President of the American Theatre Association, which at the time was an umbrella-like system that included seven other theatre organizations. I have also held offices in several other professional groups and in 2002 I became Dean of the College of American Theatre Fellows (which seeks to honor those who have made a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the field). I am also a member of some 10 other organizations that deal with theatre.
I have received several fellowships and awards, including a Fulbright and a Guggenheim fellowship. I have taught in a British university. I have received career achievement awards from some 10 professional organizations.
These I hope are some of the significant developments in my career as a teacher, scholar, administrator, etc. Anyone who wants to know more is advised to consult my full-length curriculum vitae.
