Barney Hammond

Barney Hammond is a international voice and acting coach who has been associated with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Shaw Festival Theatres of Canada and with professional actor training conservatories of North Carolina School of the Arts and the National Theatre School of Canada.

On Broadway this season, actors that Hammond has taught have appeared in productions of THE 39 STEPS, BOEING BOEING, EQUUS, and Off Broadway in 50 WORDS.

He is a specialist in acting Shakespeare and other classical texts. His students have been members of such classsical theatre companies as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford and Shaw Festivals of Canada, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington DC, Lincoln Center Theatre, and Old Globe Theatre, San Diego.

He has worked with such Tony Award winning actors and directors as Michael Langham, Brian Bedford, Ron Silver, and Vivian Matalon. Other leading directors include Barry Kyle, Michael Kahn, Gerald Freedman, Joe Dowling and William Gaskill.

Barney Hammond trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama and Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Patsy Rodenburg and Cicely Berry.

He grew up in Houston where he studied with Cecil Pickett at Bellaire High School and Nina Vance at Alley Theatre.

He is currently Director of Voice of the MFA Acting Program, University of Texas at Austin.
