PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance (UT) is proud to announce the Summer Institute: Activating Learning through the Arts which meets in conjunction with the Theatre and Dance course: TD 351T/3838P Drama-based Pedagogy and Practice. Pre-service and in-service teachers, arts educators, and UT undergraduates and graduates interested in using drama-based instructional strategies across the curriculum are encouraged to apply. This two week, eight-day intensive, plus optional off-campus fieldwork, may be audited or taken for 1–3 credits.

We invite you to explore our website for lesson plan examples and information about drama-based instructional strategies and our long-term partnerships with school districts in Texas and beyond.

CURRICULUM

The Summer Institute is a research-based comprehensive pedagogical exploration and immersion training experience in the use of drama-based instruction across the curriculum. This intensive arts integration training program is co-facilitated by faculty and graduate students from the Department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Education. The Institute provides an opportunity for UT students and working professionals from across the country to gather and explore the power of learning in and through the arts.

During the course, participants will:

  • work in professional learning communities;
  • explore drama-based instructional strategies;
  • reflect on pedagogical readings;
  • develop and refine new arts-integrated curricula and/or peer training modules;
  • and, have the opportunity to observe and facilitate lesson plans with young people from the community.

The Institute concludes with the sharing of multiple drama-based lesson plans for peer review. Ongoing support for participants is provided after the class through web-based resources and a virtual professional development community. In-service participants are also eligible to receive follow-up and support from UT faculty through the Drama for Schools program model.*

Workshop fee (non-UT students only): $875 (includes UT parking for two weeks and books)
Tuition and fees for one to three credits (Texas resident): $897–$1413
Tuition and fees for one to three credits (non-Texas resident): $1301–$2540

HOUSING

For non-Austin area participants, housing is available on UT 's campus, just 2 blocks from the Winship Drama Building. Cost is $35/night for a shared room, and $70/night for a single room.  All rooms come fully furnished, including linens, and have a private bathroom.  Many on-campus and local dining locations are located nearby.
